As many of you have read, the last few months have involved a large change in our lifestyle as we have moved from our historical downtown home to a house in the country. Since we are renovating the entire residence, my husband and our border collie, Stella, are living in a studio loft above the local pub near the job site. It is definitely an adventure!
Known in my career as a detail driven project manager, we have decided that it is a good idea that I work closely with the contractor to oversee the design elements and the budget of the project. We are also not using a designer because I am p-a-r-t-i-c-u-l-a-r. Did I also mention that I am a micromanager and I do not leave decisions, particularly about style, to others? Thus far, my time to date has been dedicated to updating the layout of the floor plan and coordinating the basic materials including countertops, flooring, plumbing fixtures, paint etc. The materials chosen have been conservative and timeless...in other words, slightly boring...but classic does not reqire a remodel in a few short years!
Fortunately, we are finally entering what I would consider the "fun" and creative aspect of the project. My husband, who is a quintessential surfer displaced in the Northwest, has agreed to allow a few more equestrian elements into the interior design. We do not have design centers in our proximity, but I am a researcher due to my marketing career and I pretty confident that I can locate just about any product needed (Google is an amazing tool!). Unfortunately, sometimes the items I am attracted to are "budget breakers", yet it is more important to us that our bottom line reman in the black. Luckily, I am quite practical, yet I do have an appreciation for choices that remain aspirational.
As of today, I found the first items that I thought, "If budget were not an issue." I discovered the Hermes Home Furnishings Collection that includes GORGEOUS wallpapers and fabrics. The iconic house has included designs like whimsical elephants and botanical prints, yet these are supplemented with complimentary more subtle prints. Remaining true to its equestrian heritage, the collection showcases many stunning designs of this genre.
Without a doubt, my favorite fabric is called "couvertures et tenues de jour" because of its intricate detail in design of multiple racehorses dressed in their fineries. You may recognize it from the House's famous scar. The process used to create the fabric is precise and impeccable. This fabric is available in a variety of colors.

Another favorite is this classic fabric that is befitting for any equestrian lifestyle enthusiast. The herringbone background perfectly completes the rich colors withing the design.

I tyically find wallpaper a little too permanent and perhaps it just reminds me of my childhood due to its popularity during that era. While I known the trend is returning, Hermes actually changed my adversity to wall coverings. I adore the design below and it would be easily welcomed in my home today, particularly in the beige color shown above. It is available in a variety of colors.

And so I return to the more realistic choices for the interior design of our new home, and also the business at hand at my day job at K.M. Thornton & Co., llc. What a welcome distraction I had today when I discovered the beauty of he Hermes home collection during my search for fabric requested by our seamstress.
Please stay posted for more updates on our country remodel...we are just turning the corner from demoliton to rebuild and I am excited to share some of my favorite equestrian themed design elements as well as the before and afters!
Salut!
