The American Sytem of Forward Riding has been perpetuated for decades by supporters dedicated to the sport. For many years, the most prestigious "equitation" championships included "The Medal", "The Maclay", and "The USET" and these events were primarily focused on riders of 18 years and younger. Pre-internet, the only way one could experience the finals was either in person or through print publications.
For a multitude of reasons, the number of championships have expanded and would probably best be described as talent finals. Each program has a specific objective as to the skills they desire to hone in American riders. The advancement of multimedia technology has allowed the number of spectators to grow exponentially by providing coverage of the events in real time. The concensus is that through observation, especially when coupled with expert commentating, is that each of us has an opportunity to glean knowledge of the intricacies of our sport. This year will be particularly educational as George Morris will be the lead commentator for the the livestream during the ASPCA Maclay Finals.
Because the evolution of developing competitive hunter/jumper riders has led to an expanded number of events, we have created a reference guide to assist you in easily navigating the dates, objectives, links for additional information, and media coverage of the top fall championships. We are especially excited to recognize the importance of the Emerging Athletes Program (EAP) and it's comprehensive development of young American talent as well as Ariat's continued support over the past two decades in perpetuating equitation skills amongst amateurs.
Although our industry struggles with several issues, it is refreshing to realize that regardless of age or socioecononic position, there is an immense amount of support by multiple organizations and personal donors in growing the depth of skills amongst our riders in the U.S.
Salut!
