This Sunday marks the 87th year of the most esteemed recognition for excellence in the film industry, the Academy Awards. While much of the press coverage is focused on the year’s nominees, the media also captivates its audience with featured stories about the couture gowns, late night after parties, sumptuous cuisine and the extravagant “swag bags”. From lavish trips to beautiful clothing, the contents of these gifts are always much anticipated, as they should be, due to their uniqueness and value. This year the recipients will receive something that most of us that enjoy the equestrian lifestyle will appreciate: handmade leather cuff bracelets from Mack and Jane Jewelry.
Company founder Jane Makransky is a hands-on artisan that designs and creates these beautiful pieces in her Pennsylvania studio. Each cuff is handcrafted using various leathers from Europe and many of the embellishments are also imported.
Jane describes the inception of the studio and her adoration for leather as the basis of her jewelry, "Mack & Jane cuffs were born when I discovered leather as a decorative and malleable medium, rather than a static, unchangeable form. I learned that by using various leather colors and textures, beautiful patterns emerge… As most designers will say, inspiration comes from everywhere, and sometimes from the most unexpected places-- like my husband's Tattersall shirt or a plaid blanket that I saw when shopping!”
This year I will be enjoying my annual tradition of Chinese takeout as I relax on my comfortable couch and watch the Oscar red carpet pre-show. While I will appreciate the beauty of the Harry Winston diamonds adorning the stars, the thought of a beautiful leather Mack and Jane cuff won’t be far from my thoughts!
Salut!

Jane Makransky might not spend time in the saddle, but her adoration of horses began early in her childhood and remains an important influence in her lifestyle. Explains Jane, “As a child I rode at summer camp. My life in the other seasons was as a pure suburbanite. But I never lost my love for horses… What has stayed with me through the years are the patterns, textiles, colors and combinations that one generally associates with ‘equestrian style'. Those elements are infused in my clothing and my home, and of course, my jewelry.”
