In the Northwest, we are still in the throws of winter. Synthetic fabrics and chemical feet and hand warmers assist in keeping equestrians warm, but many of us still rely on traditional wool coolers to properly dry out our horses and monitor their temperatures to prevent chill. There is something about the combination of beautiful wools with leather trimmings that just emanates tradition, while providing warmth and comfort. Not to mention, my trainer has a stack of “retired” coolers that each hold a special story as to who, what, where and when the memorable prize was given. They preserve a moment of time; yet remain a practical necessity in our tack room.
If a traditional cooler was synonymous with a specific specific brand, I feel it would be Burberry. While many of our favorite equestrian lifestyle brands have roots in the harness industry, Burberry’s legacy began with the most famed adventurists and has evolved into the preeminent outdoor clothing apparel company known for the technical efficacy of its fabrics. Sir Ernest Shackleton was pictured in 1915 wearing the brand’s gabardine in Antarctica and Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown wore Burberry aviator suits in 1919 to pilot their plane in an exposed cockpit in the first non-stop transatlantic flight (1). Today, the brand is known around the world as one of the most famous luxury apparel companies, and the brand’s iconic trench coat may be found in both trendsetter and classic wardrobes alike.

Equestrian influences may be interpreted across the breadth of Burberry’s product lines. The use of leather is popular on both coats, handbags and of course, footwear. Snaffle bit trimmings are a simple adornment found on footwear and those who appreciate the finest fabrics covet the company’s selection of wool cashmere. No marks are better known, though, than the iconic Burberry check pattern and the equestrian knight logo that was trademarked in 1901.
We hope you enjoy this specially curated collection for the K.M. Thornton & Co. marketplace and now you may better appreciate the legacy of this iconic company with a rich history in outdoor adventure and sport.
