As an interior designer whose personal style tends toward the modern, it may come as a surprise that one of my favorite design trends of the last decade is neither contemporary, nor cutting edge, but rather, plucks a page from the book of pastoral – it’s the barn door.
Barn doors refer mainly to doors that slide across a wall rather than open inward, outward or tuck in to the wall itself (i.e. a pocket door). While barn doors were initially used as a design solution for small spaces that couldn't accommodate a traditional door; that is no longer the case today. Nor are barn doors limited to the rustic look that the term can conjure.
There are many ways to introduce barn doors in to a space. A home’s architectural style can help dictate size, form and finish of the doors, but barn doors are flexible enough to go with nearly any kind of style.
In addition, the hardware, door pulls and locks can further reinforce the design message you’re looking to send.
Below are some great examples of barn doors in modern residential settings

Some say that barn doors are a trend that will fade. I disagree. Sliding barn doors have been around for hundreds of years for a reason – because they’re functional. Now that the design world has taken them under their wing, their form is on par with their function. In the furniture world, that is a recipe for timelessness.
