{Featured Artisan & Studio: Renata et Jonathan}
“ Just like your favorite pair of jeans, these jewelry pieces transcend seasons and fads, and get better with wear” ~Renata and Jonathan
I first fell in love with wax embossing over 20 years ago in a tiny paper boutique in Florence, where I purchased a beautiful engraved personalized stamp. I had grand plans to send out that year’s holiday cards with my initial prominently embossed on the back of each custom envelope. What ensued was somewhat of a disaster of dripped wax, partially embossed seals and “feedback” from friends that they had received a card with a strange red smudge on the back. Unlike the hand carried delivery services of old world Europe, I forgot to factor that the US Postal Service has automated machinery that is not forgiving to the rigid texture of hardened wax.
Due to my initial and laborious introduction to working with wax seals, it is not difficult to understand why I fully appreciate the handmade jewelry from Renata et Jonathan. The initial part of the namesake, Renata, specializes in hand crafted personalized jewelry. She works primarily with Precious Metal Clay (PMC) to create one of a kind pendants that originate from wax seals stamps, actual wax seals and intaglio gemstones from the late 18th and 19th century. A true artisan, Renata has continued to study with experts thus allowing her to expand her line to include terrarium as well as fingerprint pieces.
To own a piece from Jonathan and Renata is to own the epitome of luxury. Each piece is made to order to and no two are exactly the same. They are adamant about never having casts made for mass production. In Jonathan’s words, “We are the designers, makers, photographers, and shippers of every piece of artwork and jewelry from our studio in New Jersey. When you are buying from our shop, you know that every step of the process has been carried out by us, thus making your piece truly handmade.”
