It is a rare moment when those with a great appreciation for sport horses use the synonym “brilliant” as a descriptor for a specific equine. Perhaps it is the animal's way of going, expression, natural physical beauty or all of the above that earn this reference to excellence. The first time I saw a painting by Jan Lukens, the word that immediately surfaced to mind was “brilliance”.
The equestrian community is extremely fortunate to have a fine artist with both the raw talent and formal training of Jan Lukens entranced in this subject area. With a resume that includes exhibitions in some of finest galleries of the world, including the Smithsonian, the incredibly humble Mr. Lukens also recognizes the importance of sharing his work with the community that best understands his main subjects. Reflects Jan, “(I previously) exhibited at 5 – 7 major show jumping events a year, and made close friends with many equestrians. Our shared love of horses has always been the common bond.”
An Esteemed Exhibition
2015 will mark a unique return of Mr. Lukens to the hunter/jumper world during the National Horse Show. The management involved has diligently worked to resurrect the prestige and illustriousness of this iconic show since finally determining a permanent home amidst the legendary horse country of Lexington, Kentucky. The Taylor Harris Club strives for excellence through hospitality and culinary excellence and it will once again raise the experience for attendees by hosting an exhibition of Mr. Lukens' ‘Big Horse’ series during The National. BEYOND REPRESENTATIONAL ART
From a purely objective perspective, the technical detail of each piece that Jan Lukens creates is remarkably represented in each piece. What differentiates his work is that one can “feel” the heart and soul of each animal. Mr. Lukens clarifies, “For every photograph I’ve taken of my subjects that I select to use as reference for a painting, there are hundreds that I reject. I start with observing a photo that I love, and I mainly try to be as accurate as my skills allow with the anatomy, shapes, and values to recreate my idea of the image. The colors, final details, edges of shapes, and expression are all subjective to my whim as I work to make each painting my best effort. The emotion of the subject is accurately conveyed if I get everything else right.”
