It is getting hot out there! One of the biggest summer fashion trends to take the equestrian sport world in the last few yeas is the sun shirt. When chosen with appropriate style and fit, these shirts are appropriate for both training at home as well as wearing in the show ring. It is important to realize that while these shirts are on trend, more importantly they were developed to protect your skin from harmful UV rays that are linked to skin cancer, sun burn and accelerated skin aging.
SUN SHIRT TIPS:
1.) UPF: Only purchase apparel provided with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) Rating from the manufacturer. This numerical score indicates how effective the shirt is from shielding your skin from UV rays and gauges fabric effectiveness against both Ultraviolet and UV light.
2.) PROPER FIT: For proper effectiveness, make sure that the fit is not too TIGHT! This has become an unsightly trend on the horse show scene and defeats the purpose of the garment. According to REI.com, “ If a (UPF) garment is stretched 10% or more beyond its normal dimensions, spaces between yarns are widened and its effectiveness against UV light may be reduced up to 40%. (1)”
3.) LONG SLEEVES: Always purchase long sleeves for better coverage from the sun. Most sun shirts are specially designed to keep you as cool as possible and include mesh under the arms for ventilation, moisture wicking and breathable attributes.
4.) LAUNDERING: Home laundering has been shown not to reduce the UPF rating of fabrics. Remember to always check your garments laundering instructions.
5.) CONDITION: As your garment fabric wears out, it may not be as effective against UV light. Replace as necessary for full benefits.
KASTEL DENMARK
One of the most sought after labels in both the hunter/jumper and dressage disciplines is Kastel Denmark. I was originally drawn to the aesthetics of the brand's classic simplicity, but while shopping at Alta Hills Tack, the boutique's proprietor (Holly Keefer Dwyer) provided me with an in depth explanation of the background of Kastel and its unrelenting dedication to skin protection. After hearing the brand's story, I became a devotee.
Founded by accomplished equestrian and impressive businesswoman, Charlotte Jorst, Kastel Denmark was formed from a need she discoverd in the marketplace for activewear with integrated sun protection. This decision was strongly influenced by her personal experience and those of close friends with the sun’s harmful effects on the skin. While the line was launched foremost with a commitment to sun protection, the founder's added understanding of the needs of the active individual has resulted in stylish and comfortable garments with the important benefit of UV protection.
To purchase, shop online at the KASTEL STORE . If you neeed fitting advice, contact Holly Dwyer directly at Alta Hills Tack via phone at 801.664.2500 and she will happily assist with your purchasing needs.
