FITS RIDING BREECHES
INNOVATION IN ATHLETIC APPAREL
I just finished “Shoe Dog"- the memoir penned by the founder of Nike, Phil Knight. Rather a mysterious character, Mr. Knight candidly unveils a private glimpse into the founding of NIKE, which was anything but simple and straightforward. As a runner, resident of the Pacific Northwest, and a former corporate marketer, I am in awe of the fortitude necessary to create a brand in an unconventional region that eventually revolutionized athletic apparel and accessories. Additionally, because the founders' remained committed to retaining and building their headquarters and eventual campus in Oregon, they established Western Oregon as an epicenter athletic wear research and development, which influenced other disciplines including equestrian sports.
What does this have to do with my daily wardrobe, i.e.."uniform" ? For the last three years, I have almost exclusively worn FITS RIDING breeches to both school and show in. Originally founded in Oregon, the brand is an innovator in the field of technical equestrian wear. Due to my conservative hunter influenced style, I was very skeptical when I was convinced to try the brand's breeches on at HITS Thermal by a FITS representative. Once I put on my first pair, I was sold. The fabric and style attributes reminded me more of my high quality running and yoga tights than the breeches that were on the market at the time. The fabric was neither too heavy or too shear and my favorite benefits included a built in ab panel similar to Spanx for core support, a gusseted crotch for a flexible and comfortable fit (much like my best yoga leggings) and effective deerskin knee patches that firmly grip the saddle. Additionally, I am totally comfortable going from Street to Stable wearing this brand and I often receive compliments from non-horse riders that think I am just wearing a fashion forward style.
As an athlete, I am impressed with the the technology and aesthetics of the breech. You can therefore imagine my alarm when I discovered that two entrepreneurs from South Carolina, Lida Bard and Brian Allenby, were not only purchasing the company but they were also moving the headquarters to South Carolina. As a consumer, my concern was unnecessary Since their purchase, I have continued to weed out my older breeches and grow my collection of the FITS knee patch breeches (10 and counting!) since I wear them daily, regardless of the external temperature. I can wholeheartedly attest that FITS lives up to its mission:
“We strive to be innovators and stay on the cutting edge of technological apparel. We bring you only the best fabrics to wick, provide sun protection, and support your body. Just like when you ride, the most important quality you need in your riding apparel is performance. You work hard and so does your FITS apparel. “
A CONVERSATION WITH FITS:
Q: FITS was originally founded in Oregon, an area that is known as innovators for technical athletic products, most namely NIKE. What motivated Brian and Lida to purchase FITS in 2015?
A: The previous owner and founder of FITS was looking to retire and sell the company. Brian and Lida were looking for equestrian related business careers. Lida has ridden since she was a kid and always dreamed of having a career to do with horses.
Q: What is Brian and Lida's connection to the equestrian world?
A: Lida grew up riding and was a member of her local Pony Club and early on she fell in love with Eventing. She currently has 4 horses that live at home. After taking care of the horses and mucking stalls for years, Brian decided he wanted to learn to enjoy horses too. He has been riding for over two year and thoroughly enjoys it!
Q: FITS has a number of patents on fabric technology. Do you plan on continuing your R & D and using this solid foundation as the basis for new designs and collections or both?
A: FITS is known for being technically innovative and we want to maintain this edge by both utilizing our existing patented technology as well as ongoing research and development. We plan on using our existing technical innovation as a jumping off point for future product development.
Q: What inspires new product designs or collections?
We are continually seeking new ideas and what we can do to improve existing products and crete new ones, looking at existing problems in the industry, and how we can solve them. For inspiration, we look at other athletic industries for what is trending any how we can use elements in our line to introduce them to the equestrian industry. Customer feedback is also not overlooked, whether it is a color that we receive frequent requests for, a new style, or an update to a current style.
Q: How is the growth of FITS with international riders?
A: Prior to the transition, FITS was sold internationally in 11 countries Sinice then we have been making a conscious effort to break into new markets, as well as to build our existing presence abroad. FITS attended SPOGA Horse (the largest European Equestrian Trade Show) for the first time in August 2015 and continues to do so. We also plan to attend BETA in the United Kingdom. We have added new international retailers as well as increased our sales to existing international retailers. FITS is currently sold by retailers in approximately 18 countries. In addition to FITS' US Patents, we also have a European patent.

Brian's Picks for Show Hunter Riders
FITS is a favorite of riders across multiple English riding disciplines, including meeting the needs of the show hunter rider. The brand has been a generous supporter of the US Show Hunter Division across all levels including open, amateurs and juniors. Sponsorships include:
- USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship
- USHJA Pre-Green Incentive Championship
- USHJA World Champion Hunter Rider Spectacular
- USHJA World Champion Hunter Rider Challenge
- USHJA Children's/Adult Amateur Hunter Regional Finals
FITS currently offers two knee patch styles. The Kimberly Knee Patch (see below) features our perforated deer skin for the patches, euro seat traditional zip front and slash pockets, and is made from our compression PerforMAX fabric. The Kimberly also has a mesh sock bottoms (not the dreaded velcro) and a unique mesh panel int the front waist area called an "Ab-Panel". The Ab-Panel helps support the core and works like built in Spanx, smoothing and flattening everything.
Our other knee patch style is called the Kallie (see below). It is a four way stretch woven breech with silicone "treads". Our silicone design was created for FITS by a shoe tread expert- it provides moveable grip for directional friction. The Kallie features a euro seat, sock bottoms, traditional zip front, slash pockets, and stylish bridle stitch embroidery on the back pocket flaps and flattering hip embroidery for a slimming look.
