Stable to Sea
Our name, Street to Stable®, describes how this community is connected by the love for the horse and the passion then encompasses multiple facets of the lifestyle including sport, dress, friendships, social activities, décor, and much more. My husband, Tim, has been surfing since childhood and his community has the same overlapping similarities that follow its members for life. Important to mention, Tim’s “signature” trait is to show up at the barn in flip-flops, knowing full well that he is not allowed near what he calls “large, scary animals.” Likewise, I visit surf breaks wearing clothing that covers almost every inch of my skin, all the while reminding him that I prefer not to cleanse my sinus system with salt water. It is true that opposites attract and we totally understand, respect and support each other’s passion for our respective lifestyle sports without feeling a need to participate directly.
While our lifestyle passions are very different, they do share some cross-over. Examples include participating through photography (Tim is totally dedicated to capturing surf/ocean images ), sun protection (hats, sunscreens and glasses) AND most recently, a unique line of footwear: OLUKAI. Built on a core value system that includes innovation in design, this brand was inspired by the waterman lifestyle and has deep roots to the Hawaiian culture. Interesting, on the West Coast of California we have seen a great influx of Olukai at hunter/jumper horse shows, specifically the PEHUEA style. When I purchased my first pair from EQU Lifestyle Boutique, I did not make the immediate connection that this was a line I had often seen with Tim at surfing stores. The PEHUEA is a natural choice for the conditions at horse shows- sand, water and a lot of walking! The anatomical footbed is removable and washable (a must for me!) and offers heel stability and arch support. Additionally, you can drop down the heel to “slide” them on after you take off your riding boots. Such a bonus on hot days when your boots are wet on the interior from perspiration (I know, gross), and you want to slide on a breathable and comfortable shoe.
Beyond the Islands
As many of you know, I try to adhere to wearing a “uniform." Consisting of pieces that are a bit more urban and classic, I prefer to purchase only a few high quality items each season. My current favorite “go to” for footwear that is perfect for the rainy Pacific Northwest and just recently while visiting Oahu’s North Shore amidst stormy weather is Olukai's WAIPAHĒ style. A take on the Chelsea boot, I find it is bit more refined than the traditional style, thus giving it a sleek look particularly with skinny jeans and leggings. Important in our rainy climate, the shoe has a washable footbed that is moisture wicking. I have worn this shoe perusing ultra luxury boutiques, meeting friends for coffee and even walking over parts of the rocky shoreline in Hawaii. This is definitely a shoe I will need to double up on, so that I have a pair for nice occasions as it is has become the workhorse of my wardrobe.
Additionally, I wear the HO'ŌPIO LEATHER LEATHER sandal to and from hot yoga, a sport I use to cross train for riding. I also typically wear them to the ocean with Tim on his surf photography excursions. They are the first “flip-flop” that I have been able to wear straight out of the box without the pain of breaking in. This is because of their construction in design for comfort and support. I prefer the leather style for a more polished, yet still casual look.
As for Tim, he has grown quite a collection of Olukai. Where I seem to accumulate running shoes for various conditions, he collects sandals (i.e. flip flops). As of lately, he has also purchased from the expanding line of leather Olukai shoes. The style he wears are professional enough for his more relaxed office days and he also wears them when we are out on casual nights. I am so pleased that Olukai has provided the first footwear brand where BOTH of our personal styles intersect - from the street to the stable to the sea and well beyond!
