Fall is almost here: It's Time to Nest

Last weekend I enjoyed a few days of gorgeous weather in the iconic resort town Sun Valley, Idaho.   Throughout the summer and during ski season, this little tourist area is PACKED with outdoor enthusiasts exploring and enjoying the natural wonders of the West. This past weekend, though, the town was extremely quiet.  School has now commenced in many regions  (whatever happened to post Labor Day???), which parallels with the end of the summer holiday season and office executives are regularly occupying their business suites again.  Many of us are settling back to more of a regimented schedule and our homes and domestic life take on a refreshed priority.   In the last week,  I have found myself cleaning closets, washing walls and “refreshing” a few rooms. … and organizing and taking inventory of winter horse blankets and sheets! 

Like clockwork, each year in late summer I begin to domesticate our lifestyle again.  I make an effort to better reflect each season throughout the décor of the house, especially in bedrooms and sitting rooms.  One way I do so it to alternate pillow covers that have been specially chosen for each room.  A wonderful source I have found for personalized natural fiber pillows is a small studio in Alabama called Urban Nest Designs.  Each pillow is designed and hand drawn and painted (not screen-printed) by the owner/artisan, Sheryl Pitts Theus.  Explains Pitt, “My style is rustic and I use only natural fiber fabrics which include burlap, cotton canvas and linen. My collections include English, Irish and French inspired designs such as beautiful architectural and damask patterns, a variety of animals, and nature, as well as coastal and seaside themes. I like to think of them as "little pieces of art", not your ordinary home accent pillow."  Each pillow is constructed of the highest quality with finished seams to prevent fraying and back zipper closure. 

I am particularly drawn to Sheryl’s work because they are one of a kind. Most of the designs are customizable and you can add monograms or names or phrases of words. She also creates custom pillows of pets (dogs, cats, horses, etc.), from customer's personal photographs that can be sent via email. Not only are they perfect for home decor, but they are a beautiful addition to custom horse show furnishings.
