“Lithe, agile, and extremely photogenic, horses are a modern model’s best friend—and a full-body workout buddy, to boot. While many flock to the Dogpound or Ballet Beautiful to achieve long, lean figures, a growing camp of runway-walkers is embracing the time-honored benefits of an equestrian lifestyle, making for toned frames and even better Instagram moments.”

THOUGHTS
Each of us that ride has probably had to defend our sport to a naysayer that our sport is a workout. It was a refreshing surprise when I read this article titled “Horseback Riding Is the Model Workout of the Moment: Gigi Hadid, Edie Campbell, and More” online from Vogue reposted yesterday on Facebook.
I don’t care what equestrian discipline you participate in, riding and barn work burns calories and requires strength. Just today, during an intense flat work ride, my thighs burned after practicing without stirrups and my core was taxed as we spent the majority of the session working on counter cantering with transitions. As I finished up by unsaddling, cleaning tack and washing and liniminting my hunter, I noted that my Apple Watch Fitness tracker recorded approximately 250 calories- approximately the same amount I burn when running 30 minutes at an 8:30 minute mile pace.
A step in the right direction by mainstream culture is demonstrated by Vogue recognizing the physical benefits of an equestrian lifestyle. We must also remember that as with any sport, participants must integrate complementary health and wellness choices to maximize the benefits. Proper nutrition, core and strength training and aerobic activities are a must to perform not only at your best, but to also assist your equine partner in performing at theirs.
Salut!
