Located in the South of France perched upon a ledge in the village of Chateau-Verdun, lives Chateau de Gudanes. I use the word “lives “intentionally because this proud estate recorded as a Class I Historic Monument sat in severe disrepair for years before being rescued by an Australian family, Craig and Karina Waters, in 2013. The Waters are not only restoring the architecture and reclaiming the grounds, but also bringing life back to the entire property.
The Water’s spent 2 years negotiating to purchase Chateau de Gudane after it had sat on the real estate market for 4 years. Their work from the date of purchase has been well documented through the Internet and social media. Through words and pictures, their passion in awakening and sharing this once sleeping beauty is clearly evident, as is their passion for the local culture and community.
I stumbled upon the Chateau de Guadane on Instagram and was immediately captivated. Those who have followed this blog understand that I have deep appreciation for architecture as well as artisans of all skills. When I contacted the Chateau about writing this story, I was shocked to receive an email directly from the owner, Katrina. Her warmth and dedication to preserving the authenticity of the property and the culture of the region was clearly apparent. Understanding that this is an equestrian focused blog, she kindly provided pictures of the Cheval de Mérens , the small rustic ponies native to the Ariège region Midi-Pyrénées that live on the property. She explained that there are several of these beautiful black equines that have made 'Le Parc' on the château’s estate, their home. The Water's even open up the Chateau for local competitions featuring the Cheval de Mérens.
My dream is to one day visit this celebration of French history, but until then I will continue to enjoy following the progress of restoration that is regularly documented on Facebook as well as Instagram and the Chateau’s website. I can not convey strongly enough for all of you that are interested in French culture and hospitality (including food), nature, architecture, and historical preservation to visit the Chateau’s online pages and perhaps even visit this grand estate on your tavels!
Salut!
