Over a year ago, I was dashing out the door to meet a cab at 5 am to leave on an important business across the country, when I could hear what was best described as sprinklers resonating from a spare bedroom. I wasn’t too far off in my assessment as I discovered that our 100 year old home was spewing water from an upper floor ceiling vent. A quick call to the contractor, a very large bucket, several towels, and a final check of my necessary items and I was off on my journey. Little did I know, that my careful placement of my diamond wedding rings, which I always exchange for a platinum band when traveling, were misplaced in this early morning chaos.
After a year of missing my delicate heirloom jewelry, I decided it was time to finally replace the pieces. I started by researching diamonds, and then I realized, why? I actually have a very “gamine” style and my days are filled with horses, keyboards, and exercise. While diamonds are quite beautiful, they just did not fit how my lifestyle had evolved. I needed a unique piece with smooth edges that I could wear from day to night and remained looking stunning and chic. Up until this debacle, I was leaving my wedding rings in my jewelry box when I traveled and I never wore my set at the stable.
By chance, my husband and I were on holiday last summer and walked into a Bulgari jeweler in La Jolla, CA. Upon looking in the front display case, I immediately knew I had discovered the perfect ring – the Anish Kapoor B.ZERO1. From my interpretation of meta-luxury, the ring embodied this philosophy because it was exactly what “I” as the consumer found beautiful and it made me feel uniquely special. I had a deep respect for Bulgari because of their 125 plus year heritage, which to this day maintains its first and flagship store founded in 1905 in Via Condotti in Rome, The design of the collection that I evaluated in La Jolla embodied a sense of modernity, which seemed to depict the ability of the company to continuously think forward I was not able to achieve instant gratification by leaving with the ring, as my size had to be crafted, but the suspense of waiting for it to arrive made receiving it even more special. When it finally arrived- it was beautifully packaged and I felt like I was truly opening a very, very special gift, I knew that I had found a piece of jewelry that I will look forward to wearing for many years- both casually, dressed up, and on my beloved horses.
